Yesterday morning we went and spent a few hours in a local hospital. It was a public hospital and the conditions were not surprising but no matter how many of these hospitals I see, I still can’t believe that surgeries are done here! On this particular day, it was one of the three days that the surgeons were performing gallbladder removals. Surgeons came to this hospital from all over and were all going to perform about 300 gallbladder removals in a three-day span.
The first thing I saw was the birth of a baby! The baby was SO tiny…only a little over two pounds. Then, the doctor got a funny look on his face and did a quick inspection and surprise! Twin baby girls! The second came out and wasn’t crying and was so, so blue. After a couple of minutes of CPR, the baby started breathing. After this, we had to leave so I’m not sure of how the girls are doing now. But, we are keeping both of them and their mommy in our prayers!!
After this, I went from OR to OR to see some surgeries and then ended up in the ER. Here, I took vitals and information from patients. It was such a great experience. After we left the hospital, we went and shopped in the market for a couple of hours and also were able to tour a fortress in Masaya. It was full of bats and scorpions and the guide was great about explaining what everything was. His English was impressive! We had a great dinner last night and went to a club in Masaya for some dancing.
We have all had such a great week and have gotten so close. We are so lucky to get to spend our spring breaks this way!
